The J. Douglas Hodgson Elementary School opened its doors to students for the first time in September, 1972. At that time, students in Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 from Gooderham, Wilberforce and Haliburton attended this school. For the next few years it was called the Haliburton Highlands Senior Elementary School. In 1984 the name was changed to the J. Douglas Hodgson Elementary School in honour of the first Director of Education for Haliburton County.
Our present dual track school is now a part of the Trillium Lakelands District School Board that is made up of Victoria County, Haliburton County and Muskoka District. Also, our school no longer has Grade 3 students, as it did from 1988 – 1999. These students now attend the K to 3, Stuart Baker Elementary School, which is situated to the west of our school.
