Student musical performance
The intermediate band, made up of Grade 7 and 8 students from V.K. Greer Memorial Public School led by teachers Jennifer Pitts and Angela Kujala, performed a variety of holiday songs for the trustees, senior administration team, and guests to enjoy.
Director’s Recognition
The Director’s Recognition Award highlights extraordinary contributions by staff members, students, school volunteers, or community members, and is presented by the director of education, Wes Hahn, at each Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Regular Meeting of the Board. Hahn introduced this month’s recipients of the Director’s Recognition Award.
A member of Wahta Mohawks, Elder Christopher Stock is a teacher of Indigenous culture and traditions. In this role, he brings generational knowledge to life in the classroom and is a valued member of the Indigenous Education Advisory Circle. Elder Stock shares with students the Thanksgiving Address, teachings of the wampum, social dancing and songs, and life as Haudenosanuee People. His kind, gentle manner is welcomed by all students and staff. He is a strong advocate for Indigenous Education and has dedicated his life to helping all see the value and importance of teaching Indigenous ways of knowing and being. His teachings continue to inspire everyone he meets to learn more about the traditional ways.
Mary Lou Lefler, district principal of Special Education, fills a very important role in our Board. She is a great problem solver who offers insightful and practical suggestions. Lefler is a system thinker who uses her depth of knowledge in both Special Education and Curriculum Services to lead us forward as a system, not in silos. She understands the stressors and complexities of school leadership and uses her common sense to guide her team and schools forward in a manner that always puts students first. She is always supportive and never judgmental; her staff appreciate her leadership style, which they describe as a humble and “seeking to understand” approach. Lefler is intentional about growing future leaders through capacity building, trust, and support.
CACE Bravo! Awards
The Canadian Association of Communicators in Education (CACE) is a national association of professionals committed to encouraging and enhancing excellence in communications in education. The CACE BRAVO! Awards are the only Canada-wide awards specifically designed to recognize achievements in school board communications, honouring the exemplary work in all aspects of school public relations, communications, marketing, and engagement each year.
On October 24, TLDSB received two awards for communications projects.
In the Coup de Coeur category, TLDSB received recognition for:
- Menstrual Equity Campaign Logo, created, delivered, and promoted by communications manager, Carolynne Bull, and communications officer, Sinead Fegan.
In the Communication Project category, TLDSB received an Award of Distinction for:
- The TLDSB Board Website Redevelopment communication project and plan, executed by communications manager, Carolynne Bull, communications officer, Sinead Fegan, and e-learning design technician, Bryce Huskilson.
Administrative reports
EQAO results for the 2021-2022 school year
Trustees were presented with the elementary and secondary panel Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results from the 2021-2022 school year. Presented by superintendent of learning, Jennifer Johnston, the EQAO results for students with special needs reflected improvements in both panels. Superintendents of learning, Jay MacJanet and Kim Williams shared a highlight of the data along with trends, key learnings, and goals for elementary and secondary school students.
Director’s report on the Strategic Plan
Director of education, Wes Hahn, presented the flow and connections between the board- and school-level plans of focus that exist within TLDSB. Hahn spoke specifically about the current Board Improvement and Equity Plan (BIEP) working document, which is a requirement by the Ministry of Education to guide the focus of all provincial school boards. Hahn noted the five areas of focus, which are: achievement, human rights and equity, mental health well-being and engagement, pathways and transition, and learning recovery and renewal.
Financial Statements
Superintendent of Business Services, Tim Ellis, presented the 2021-2022 financial statements and audited report to trustees, which were accepted and approved.
